Parts of the Minnamurra Rainforest have been reopened to the public, including access to the famous Minnamurra Falls and the Visitor Centre.
Following serious storm damage, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff have been working hard to clean up the damage and re-open as much of the rainforest walks as possible.
Visitors can now walk the entire 4.2 kilometre Falls Track as well as tour the Visitor Centre.
“NPWS staff are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the Minnamurra Rainforest Centre and to showcase all that is still on offer to see,” says Labor Spokesperson for Kiama, Sarah Kaine..
The popular Lyrebird Loop Track is still partly closed, with the walk now temporarily a ‘one-way’ path where visitors can walk approximately one kilometre to the surviving bridge and enjoy the subtropical rainforest.
April’s storms saw an enormous amount of water flow through the rainforest site. Stream levels were more than four metres above their usual levels and resulted in sediment being deposited around the Visitor Centre, as well as damaging one bridge and completely destroying another.
Work is underway to replace and repair both bridges. However, this will take some time as it involves geotechnical assessment, structural engineer designs, and is a logistically and technically challenging job.
