Car Abandoned on Rail Line

Gerringong RFS attended a car found empty and abandoned on the railway line near Toolijooa Road. The car had crashed through a rail corridor fence, hitting several trees before plunging 15 metres onto the tracks below.

The Gerringong Pumper crew gained access through the rail corridor and provided fire suppression during vehicle retrieval works. Thursday saw the Gerringong pumper attend to a car fire in Foxground which had quickly spread into grassland near the road.

The fire was quickly suppressed with support from crews from Foxground RFB and Shoalhaven Head Rural Fire Brigade.

Adaptive Tennis hits a winner at Gerringong Tennis Club

Councillor Stuart Larkin and Organiser Daniel AdaptiveTennis

First session of Adaptive Tennis at Gerringong was well attended with about 25 players of various levels of ability playing tennis on the hard courts of Gerringong Tennis Club, next to the Gerringong Bowling Club.

One of those attending and playing was Kiama Councillor Stuart Larkin, who expressed his support for the arrival of adaptive tennis in Kiama.

Daniel Jones from Jones Co Tennis, told The Bugle the tennis lessons would be offered regularly, and for as many players as wish to take part.

This was the first session of Adaptive tennis anywhere on the South Coast, with a good turn out, and new players were assessed on their ability to play in similar categories to those used for the Paralympic Games and matched with players of similar ability.

NSW Tennis has expressed a commitment to embrace diversity by ensuring tennis is inclusive for players of all ability levels. People of any age, condition or ability can learn to play tennis. Photo link

Wood Made for Resilience

Kiama based wood sculptor Robert Grieves is currently displaying his work at the old Fire Station Gallery in Kiama. This is his first solo show.

Robert said to The Bugle

“Most of the wood I use is found pieces and while usually abstract, I don't plan what I will do with the wood, it emerges as I shape the wood and the grain and the patterns emerge by themselves.”

A piece that stood out were a piece made from driftwood found at East Beach, which sold as Robert was talking to The Bugle.

Robert said only recently he had started making furniture, mostly three legged stools, and a notable piece was from partly burnt wood recovered after a bushfire on the South Coast.

The woods Robert works with are diverse, but include local red cedar, banksia, cypress pine and are almost exclusively Australian natives, especially hardwoods.

Most of the pieces for sale are art pieces for homes, including abstract shapes to add decor to a home, and even mobiles and other different forms.

“Resilience can show up in many forms, the recovery from the bushfire makes the wood tougher and with more of a story.’ He said as parents they supported Scandinavian ‘free or risky play’ and his daughters while young have learnt to work with knives safely and carve their own art works from wood.

Robert Grieve’s work is on display and can be bought at the Old Fire Station Gallery until Wednesday 20 December.
