Loo with a view to proceed

Council is to resume work on a grant funded project to build a small public toilet on the south east corner of Chapman Reserve.

The single assessable accessible unisex toilet has been lobbied for by the Kiama & District Sports Association, and the softball, AFL and cricket clubs that regularly use the oval.

Until now they have had to use a public toilet located in the adjacent holiday park. While sporting groups stressed how difficult this was, site visits by some councillors disputed this.

It was dubbed “a loo with a view” by Councillor Matt Brown, who supported Councillor Jodi Keast’s motion at last night's Council Meeting against the resumption of work and for the funds to be spent elsewhere.

The project is one of four funded by a $440,000 grant from the State Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund aimed at providing improved amenities and changing facilities to promote female engagement in sport. The Director of Engineering & Works said there was no guarantee the funding could be redirected to other projects if the Chapman Reserve project was abandoned.

The final location, near the eastern end of a row of pines, was chosen after consideration of the topography of the area and location of existing utility services connections, and in consultation with the sports groups and nearby residents.
